I've only known of one dev that I've seen use the "per update" payment system over the monthly (or discounted yearly) system. That's because they themselves have said they have a poor work ethic and they have the good morals (in my opinion anyway) to not want to milk people while they make infrequent updates. When you go to set your pledge amount, there's a checkbox for "Set a monthly limit" you can use to keep them from posting numerous tiny updates and have you charged for all of them.
I think that if the dev hasn't posted ANYTHING within a certain timeframe (i.e. an update to the game or just checking in to let people know they are still alive and working on the game), then it should automatically switch to the "per update" system to keep them from milking their patrons. At the very least doing so after a year, if not 6 months. However, I know Patreon, SubscribeStar, etc. won't do that since they still get a cut of the income whether the dev is giving their patrons something for their money or not. Like with many businesses nowadays, whether or not it's right takes less priority over making more money.

Replaying the game cause it's been so long i've forgotten everything... some of the humor in this game falls flatter than a sheet of paper, the showering 'joke' is completely stupid, as is the girls taking hours to get ready for the road trip... hyperbole can be good but it still has to have a basis in believability and things like this go well beyond it...

11 major game updates in 6 years (72 month) averages to 6.5 months between updates which is far too long for how short his updates in general are. Mind you his updates aren't evenly distributed.
He was trying to gloat but just showed how lazy and out of touch he really is.

Why is this guy so hung up about that he learned coding in Renpy 6 years ago, just means he has 6 years of practice working with it, so whats even the point ?
The large majority of devs here do that too, most are also self thought.
He didn't do anything in DAZ, Polarity was in HS1, neither did he work on any visuals for Radiant...
And there was only one HUGE Polarity update, the one which never arrived, after nearly 2 years of lying straight in the face of his supporters.

He brought up how he didn't know how to code, make 3d ark, etc. So, is he saying in these 6 years that he hasn't learned anything? Generally, when you learn how to do something and become more proficient in it, you take LESS time to get the same amount of work done.
In his sentences related to some people being unable to wait, if those people are paying him for something, they ARE entitled to his hard work/effort in return to some extent. If an update takes as long or longer than the previous one/s, but it's just as big or smaller even, then that shows he is putting less hard work/effort for the same amount of money. They aren't paying him to spend all of his time on X or playing FF (or whatever game). He's making more than double each month than I was working 40-hour weeks, and it's not like I live in some 3rd world country. He should be working at least that long per week on the game, but I'd be surprised if he was. If he was spending that long every week (or anything close to it), that would be something I'd use to argue that he's working hard, but he's not mentioning it or showing in some other way how he's working hard. Having to learn something new like coding doesn't show that he's working hard and putting in a lot of effort. For all we know, he's only spending 30 minutes working on learning anything new related to coding and those other things, or on improving on what he does know when it could take an hour or more to have any impact (those numbers are just examples, I don't know minimum amount of time needed to really make any progress).
It would be one thing if there were legitimate reasons to excuse things, such as extended/numerous power outages, having to spend a significant amount of time caring for a sick/injured family member, being hospitalized for a long time, or having hardware die and losing a lot a work/data as a result. However, he is not giving any excuses to defend himself, and that's probably because he doesn't have any.

Incredibly, his way of thinking is quite interesting, and I actually agree. But honestly, this just shows that he couldn’t care less about all the complaints. All that’s missing is him grabbing a straw, sticking it in a coconut, putting on some sunglasses, lounging in a beach chair with two hookers by his side, and posting a picture to make it even more blatant.

Yes I may have had an issue with the all over the place updates of AWAM but at least I stay positive. The amount of this VN is now shit because a small update after so long is getting really REALLY long in the tooth..
Be happy with what you get or move on to another VN. Getting tiresome reading bitching and moaning posts because you think an update to a game you are getting for free is "Too Small"
