I'm fairly certain the chemistry set is progression locked (on the main quest). I don't know if it's progression locked by individual characters. I used a save which had almost everything done.
Once you've found the chemistry(/alchemy) set, you go to the garage (in the afternoon I think) and then click on the table. You then read the instructions, and then add the steps in the book. I can't remember how many you get that you can't repeat (I think it's one for Rae, Cait, and Lyriel), but you get three you can repeat. Those three will be available as choices after you click the table.
In terms of gameplay, they are just a sequence of events that happen afterwards. Repeatable for the repeatables, obviously. My guess is that it's going to be a pathway for repeatable actions, which is a decent mechanic. I'm not sure there's anything particularly helpful/meaningful in terms of lore; if there was, I didn't notice it. (Though the game leans into a lot of books, television, and movies, so knowing those may mask something that was hinted at or even outright said.)
I'm going to do another playthrough and I'll put all of the potions in a post when I'm done (I posted the repeatable ones earlier). The text isn't that bad (they're not hard to do), it's more that a single mistake wipes out the instructions in the book, and it can get annoying if you overthink it. If you want to give them a shot, just make sure you read each paragraph before adding steps. I'm fairly certain that instructions don't carry into the next paragraph, but I'm working off memory; I just remember that there were a few instructions which could either be 'applies to all ingredients' or 'applies to the next one'.

I thought I'd collect all of the potions and potion related information into one post. I did a continuation of my new playthrough until I got the potions unlocked. The quests are where I noted things turning up, so they should follow properly. I'm using spoiler tags because otherwise this post would be vertically massive.

I do wish the story and the girls story progress more. Too much time wasted for side missions and mini games
I'm here for the story, so I agree. The heist side mission was story critical. It being an unskippable minigame probably wasn't great for a lot of people, particularly given how opaque some of the hints were.
That said, the mechanics may matter later. Consider:
- Dreams are a useful longer term reward mechanic, though we don't see most of them being dumped into repeatable dreams. I'm not sure why that's the case, but I suspect we're getting more gameplay dreams, and the developers either don't want to block those, or can't solve the issue where they don't block. Given the scheduler collisions we already get, and that some of those have relationship consequences (which are easy enough to repair), I feel like they may be phasing them out of certain rewards.
- Getting a potion recipe as a reward solves this problem, because it's a daytime solution. Even if the potion knocks us out and we dream/dreamwalk. IMO, it's a neat solution to an existing problem. I'm not sure if they plan to give us a dream potion, moving repeatable dreams there, and possibly adding missing replays, but it'd be a nice idea.
- It would make sense that the potion setup could be used to make a consumable at some point. I suspect this may be something that'll happen, given the nonsense with the fridge, library shelves, and cupboard. It's the first lost and found to have any real value after we've found it (such that it is). We're just holding the rest.
It'd also be nice if the items from 'Lost and Found' had some longer term gameplay value, and given how the phonograph was described, I suspect it might. Not sure how that'll shape anything.

I'm guessing nobody is having issues with the heist, as looking back since it released nobody's asking about trying to 3 stars it. I made notes on my way through this time if anyone is stuck. I saved before the maze component, and I'll go back to get a pathing solution for it at some point. Getting 3 stars for the other parts is easy.

Are you advancing Lyriel with the extra choices now at the hallway mirror and in the Library?

Each choice do them four times.
I.E. Mirror.
Library, Different request's.
It's getting her to submit more.
There are other things with her to, a se>< toy that was found for her a couple of updates ago.
You can also advance thing's with Naomi, meeting her at the kitchen bar.

Also with Caitlin when she is having breakfast.
I don't know how many other girls you can do this with yet, maybe all of them in different locations.
