You are spot on in your assessment of the San Alejo airport. The elevation alone makes it clear to the audience that the setting is a fictional location placed on a world that appears to be in all other ways... earth. If it is indeed 2020 AD earth, there are only two countries with a western Pacific Ocean coastline that is also long enough for a multi-hour flight within its borders AND moves the passengers from a cold location to a warm location: United States and Chile. Of these two countries only one of them has high school American football, and that is the United States.
