The gameplay is actually kinda okay until these fucking vents come in. Also am I wrong in thinking the characters should have invincibility frames? The running attack is practically useless otherwise.
You can see the vents a mile away and the zombies are the slow kind so if you play carefully you will be fine.

I thought about i-frames myself but being surrounded by zombies that ignore you didn't make much sense to me. Getting caught immediately after is a punishment for bad play is how I rationalized it. Enemies also just walk away when they are done with you so it's not like you are getting stun-locked like some people here claim. As a matter of fact you stun lock enemy zombies to death with your standing attack.

You don't lose until the zombies behind you reach you and you can give yourself a lot of space with your crouching attack that has very generous knockback so you should never be in a position where the vents are a problem unless you aren't paying attention in which case the trap did exactly what it was supposed to.

I think reducing the zombies health by at least half would alleviate a lot of frustrations people are having but from what I gathered the game aspect is done whuch is a shame because some platforms etc would be cool, like piled up lockers or a library level where you have to run atop the bookshelves with swarms of zombies reaching up to you.

Anyway, I didn't intend to write a book but I found myself enjoying this one more than I thought I would.

What happened to the optimization of this game? I haven't played it in a while but this new version runs terribly, the old version that still had the story mode ran perfectly fine. I'm on the low graphics setting, too.

Lord, how I wish there was a way for me to ensure everyone knew what was going on with this thing...

(NOTE: you having played previous versions, I expect you at least sort of know some of this. I am also just taking the opportunity to re-tell everyone the updated version of the whole story.)

So, they're two separate games now, but they didn't start that way. The "chalk" game was the original concept (supposedly based on some much older game they made for phones like a decade earlier), and the side-scroller was a bonus mini-game for kickstarter backers at a certain donation tier ($40+). It was, at one point, incorporated into the main game on the menu screen, but as a separately playable mini-game. It has never been a fully integrated part of the main game (which in retrospect I think would have been good, and it seems I'm not alone).

Once the whole project reached a certain level of completion, they tried to put it on Steam, and Steam said, "That's cool, except for the dog in that mini-game. We can't have that." Now, the dog is there because fans/backers voted for the dog. They couldn't just kick out the dog. So, they decided to fully remove the mini-game and make it a separate thing altogether. They came to the conclusion that the main game was not selling well enough on its own, and they needed a way to provide the now separate mini-game to people. So, they started a subscribestar page. Previous backers did NOT get any kind of free access to the subscribestar. They also cut off our emails with free ongoing updates of the game(s) and polls/questions about feedback.

Now, the original main game (chalk) has been put on indefinite hiatus, because the mini-game (side-scroller) has become the greater money-maker. They hope that if they earn enough from the side-scroller that maybe, someday, they'll be able to go back and finish the chalk game. In the meantime, they are using the money they get to fund adding extra playable characters to the side-scroller.

After replaying Secret of Mana, one of my all-time favorites and considered one of the best games on the SNES, I was reminded that it had horrible combat issues too, not to mention the AI controlled characters getting stuck around corners, the bizarre 9th weapon orbs you could get but never train up fully, and other stuff. Suddenly, I'm feeling like the hit detection and other issues in this game are ... less unacceptable. I initially was furious at the idea they felt they were "done" with the mechanics. I mean, clearly, there is room for improvement, to the point that it should have been obvious. After playing it a couple times, though, I've gotten used to its quirky defects.

"We know the secrets of the fire swamp. We can live there happily for some time."

I will say, if you are trying to win, it is imperative that you develop a method for the rapid A/D mashing to escape. When you escape, you smash hit all the zombies that have gathered around you, and it's actually quite helpful. When you fail, you have to suffer through a ridiculously long additional animation that can and will get you immediately caught by more enemies, and I am NOT a fan of that meter getting reset when a third party jumps in.
