Btw, this line and the following line seems to imply the MC and Erika didn't end up together in the future but probably just during college years. Or am I reading too much into it?

Possibly, I think the writer is trying to cover himself either way in case the relationship doesn't last past college or if they do end up together but something sad like a breakup in the future or if one of them passes away (i.e. Erika's illness comes back and kills her).

Entirely subjective but sure, ok.

I mean, they're frequently just not looking at the camera when they should be. That's plainly observable. Now whether or not that bothers you can be subjective, but let's not pretend this isn't a shortcoming. Outside of that, I guess you get a gold star for the very original observation that personal experiences are indeed subjective.
