Hello guys, any news or new information about how to translate, I looked in other forum as ULMF of a user that recap what we know about these games, but is stucked at our same point.
So here's the thing. I've accumulated all my knowledge and research in the previous post and even got a bunch of help from an expert here in f95, but the bottom line is, it's going to be somewhat impossible. First, all the story text is translated, that's the easy part. The problem after this, is that the game needs a wordwrap desperately. Almost a good 25% of the lines have text runoff and this is due to the fact that the font style, font type, and line limit is stored in a specific custom code in start.ax, or the game itself. We all have unpacked the game as deep as we can, and there is no specific setting or file encoded that specifies these changes. In other words, you're going to have to learn some deep hexcode or shoot your chance in the dark because a ton of code is just simply hidden by the dev. None of the files contain these settings, but our closest guess was start.ax because a Korean dev made a custom piece of software to translate all of korean to japanese. The way he did though, was that he had to create a custom program that used specific coding and it was ONLY for ONE game. If he tries to use that software for another rascou game, he has to change the code all over again. And all this was simply just through the start.ax file. See how deep this problem goes?

Second, lime is absolute bonkers. You can try to translate one line and it'll work, but if you try to translate another line, or go to another cell/picture the game will crash. I've tried so many methods and routes of changing the code, but every single time the game will just crash. Lime at this point I will say has the highest level of security more complex than the FBI's security.

Third, I'm going to list my steps here so maybe someone in the future with more experience can pickup some hints. We first decompiled the game using Susie. You don't even have to use Susie, the korean dev's thread above has a piece of software that allows you to create the etc files that all come in .txt files. These .txt files all need to be translated and can be done through any software like translator++. That's the easy part. When it's all translated, you need to use HSP tool to repack the game and then simply replace the data etc in the game's folder. Game should work at this point. If anyone has trouble here, I can always provide the .txt files and would be glad to do so. We just desperately need a hacker at this point.

There is one last silver lining to rascou's games. In the story .txt files, you can edit the story text directly so that they NEVER exceed the limit of 4 lines AND, you can manually reduce the character count per line. In other words, you can manually wordwrap the game, but good luck because it's a lot of work. You can use regex to help simply it, but you're going to have manually push enter in every single entry and it's going to be a pain. Even with my super horny energy it took me days to do one game and even then it wasn't perfect.

At this point, I would say take what you can get because you're missing out on like 10% of story text if you manually wordwrap it, but that's good enough. You're better off just using textractor or something else to play the game and call it a day.

Here is the best solution I have for anyone out there right now. Once you unpack the data etc file and get all the txt files, you need to manually limit each pack of lines to 3. They cannot be more than 3 or the game will crash. So you need to use regex or someway to make sure each block of story text does not have more than 3 lines. It will look like this:

"
Hello my name is chicken
Chicken plays with a ball
Chicken ran to the tree

Look at the chicken
Tree is red
Eat my ass
"


Now if they text looks like this:

"
Hello my name is chicken
Chicken plays with a ball
Chicken ran to the tree
Fuck my ass

Look at the chicken
Tree is red
Eat my ass
"

The game will crash because "Fuck my ass" is the 4th line. You need to look through every block of text and make sure there are not 4 lines.

Lastly, you can wordwrap with regex and make it so that the character limit is like 50 or so. WARNING ABOUT THIS THOUGH BECAUSE IT WILL CREATE UNNECESSARY LINES THAT WILL MAKE IT REALLY CONFUSING TO LIMIT THE NUMBER OF LINES.

You may get something like this result. Again, this will still work, but see how there is 6 lines in the block of text above? That will crash the game.

Anyways, once you finish somehow, you can just repack into data etc, replace file and the game will work!

Damn that's a lot of work, i wonder why the dev make the engine different than the others lol
That's the problem with VN games and HSP in general. Supposedly it is a popular engine, but it runs on java and some custom code. They did not make this friendly at all for beginners. You need to have java background to understand HSP. That, paired with the mentality that jap devs generally don't want their games going outside of japan, they use custom security to make it difficult to translate.

what file is this and what game you try to translate? Is this one of text script file in data_etc.dpm? But i think this is encoding error.......... can you try change encoding to Shift-JIS?

I am trying to translate his kemono games series, particularly games 1-5. These are some old engine formatting because they only use one "data.dpm" file. Everything is crammed in there, but when I looked inside, there was the story text under one text file. I'll attach it, but when I open it with notepad or even try to change to shift-jis, it still looks like those moonrune characters

Thanks for this! I thought I'd never be able to extract data_etc of Yukari 1 (been waiting for almost 5 years).

i was able to extract all the text, got several files with the whole script in it

my issue is when i try to put all of them into HSP it keeps dying, i can't make a single DPM file with all of the text files

how were you guys able to make a single DPM file with all of it then run the game?

You only need to rebuild dpm file that contains scripts using Hot soup processor 3.6.

Long update but I gave up on this long ago, couldn't figure it out. I noticed CapuTranslations figured it out and they translated Indiscreet. Wish others would share their methods :/ Kinda sucks they're stealing our efforts.

Here is my guide for translating Hot Soup Processor games.
Prerequirements:
Install Hot Soup Processor version 3.6
Download HSPdecom
Install Notepad++ for easy editing some text file (start.hsp)

Hint 1: Max number of characters for speaking per line is 56.
Hint 2: All data must be in DPM files or game will crash and will not start.
Hint 3: In some games text is located on the images so for translating you need to use OCR for Japanese or identify characters yourself and add them in translation software and edit images in picture editing software.

1) First is decompiling 'exe' or 'dpm' file using 'HSPdecom', in decompile 'exe' folder you need to decompile 'start.ax' to get 'start.hsp' necessary for translating for 'dpm' folder it should also be created 'start.hsp' file there also should be 'start.ax' file.

2) Open newly created 'start.hsp' double click on it, it will start Japanese version of Hot Soup Processor so you have to change it on right click on 'start.hsp' than select 'properties' then on tab 'Open with:' press 'Change...' button and navigate to install folder of Hot Soup Processor and select 'hsed3_en.exe' then press
button 'open' you will see HSP Script Editor is selected press button 'ok' then press button 'apply' and after that button 'ok'.
That will make so start.hsp open in English version HSP Script Editor so it will be easy to use it.

3) In the HSP Script Editor press button 'Tool(T)' then select 'Legacy tools(R)' then select 'Edit PACKFILE(E)'.
New window will appear this is required to pack into exe or dpm press button AddAll, then delete from list start.hsp then press button close.
It will create packfile file. Packfile is for packing files in exe or dpm when select option Make .exe or Make .dpm

Note: You don't need to do step 3 for translating dpm files just follow this guide to step 6, step 7 till 9 is for translating exe only Hot Soup Processor game.

4) For translating Hot Soup Processor game that uses DPM files to store text, audio, images, video etc.
You only need to decompile DPM files that has txt file in itself. Txt files are located in 'data_etc.dpm'.
For the name of characters Hot Soup Processor uses images so they need to be edited, they are located in 'data_cg.dpm'.
For editing this images that Hot Soup Processor game uses as name of characters you can use windows Paint or any other images editing software, only problem is matching color of background.

5) In the decompiled data_etc folder you will see a lot of txt file. Some of txt files are technical files that should be ignored they are configuration, logs, hint etc.
How do you find text that you need to translate, by playing original game and seeing the first couple line of text that appears on the screen, then we trace it back in data_etc folder.
In that txt file that contains first set of text you will see something like this "也:r121n1b" that is command for Hot Soup Processor to grab image from data_cg.dpm to place it on the screen as name of the character that is speaking.
Don't translate it, leave it, but if you translate it, it will appear as text "Nari:r121n1b" the game will not crash but it will not place the image that is used for speaking by character.
If you see in txt file line like this ":fk1603これが私のIDです。よろしくお願いします。」" and/or ":tk1604おおっ。こちらこそ①」" or similar line in txt file don't translate it.

6) After you have translated all txt files now is time to create 'data_etc.dpm' file.
Go and start Hot Soup Processor 3.6 then press on the 'File(F)' then Open(O) or press on keyboard ctr+O then find 'Start.hsp' that was decompile when you decompiled 'data_etc.dpm' it should be in same folder as txt files aka data_etc folder (You can move it from folder in main game folder so it is not packed with txt file) then press open on the new open window.
It will show you game code. Now press on 'Tool(T)' the press Make .DPM from Folder(D)'.
New window named mkdpm v1.0 will appear that is in Japanese now press on the button label '参照...' Eng (Reference) it will open new window that will allow you to select folder that can be pack in .dpm format. You have to aim to the folder containing txt files.
Once you find folder containing txt files you have to select it and press ok button.
You will see in mkdpm v1.0 window left from a button '参照...' witch folder you selected for creation of 'data_etc.dpm' file.
Next in box that you see 'data' you need to rename it to 'data_etc', just click on the end of the word and add _etc
Now press on 'DPM作成' Eng (DPM Creation)
In the mkdpm v1.0 window you will see Building DPM than when its completed it will be Completed.
Now press the button that is on the bottom of this window labled '終了' Eng(Close)
It will close the window and return you to main window of Hot Soup Processor.
Close Hot Soup Processor window and go to location of newly made 'data_etc.dpm' in data_etc folder.
Original Japanese 'data_etc.dpm' in main game folder rename to 'data_etc.dpm.old'.
Now copy data_etc.dpm from data_etc folder in main game folder.
Start the game, text should be in translate in the English language.

7) From this step till step 9 are for translating exe only Hot Soup Processor game.
Now that you have did first 3 step and create PACKFILE you need to copy paste all folders, all dll files that are in same folder with game exe and 'dsoudex.hpi' file into decompiled folder of game exe. That is required so you can test the game, when you are translating it.
In decompiled game exe folder are located txt files, images, video, sound and start.ax file.
To translate game you need to translate text in txt files and in 'start.hsp' you need to translation some text that is located in there example (shops, hints, item names etc.)

8) For editing lines in 'start.hsp' you can use Notepad++. In open 'start.hsp' search for 'mes' it should look like this 'mes "はじめから" ' you can translate Japanese text but you need to keep at quotation marks example: Japanese line mes "回復ビンを手に入れた" English translated mes "Got a recovery bottle".
If you see this or similar line 'mes var_875' do not edited.
You can also rename the title of the game it appears in upper left corner of the game window in start.hsp you can find it as 'title "キノコの国のお姫さま" '

9) Now that you have translate all 'mes' that contains Japanese text in quotation marks you need to create 'start.ax' in Hot Soup Processor.
Open Hot Soup Processor English version select 'Start.hsp' and open it next press on button 'HSP(P)' next press on the button 'Make START.AX(S)' there will appear new window with message START.AX is generated that means that Hot Soup Processor created START.AX it is necessary for running the game.
Now to pack all files into exe. In Hot Soup Processor open 'Start.hsp' press on the button 'Tool(T)' then select 'Legacy tools(R)' then select 'MAKE .EXE(M)'.
New window will appear first line will be name of the exe (name it differently than original exe that you do not overwrite) below at will be size of the game window press 'OK' button to create new exe wait until new window will appear with message 'Created EXE file successfully' press 'OK' button now close the Hot Soup Processor and go to decompiling 'exe' folder inside will be newly made exe.
Now move that newly made exe in main game folder and start it. It will start like Japanese original exe.
