. I had to draw the line somewhere, though. The game is already ludicrously ambitious for a solo developer with just six routes (and a seventh planned harem route). As it is, I'm over 2.5 years into development, and probably have at least six months more needed to finish it finally. Admittedly, the first 20 months or so of that I was also working on another game, but even so the total development time just for Left Hand Magic will probably be around 2 years. Adding more routes to account for the other possible combinations would have extended that another year, at minimum.
This is absolutely true. I spent some time testing this for another dev on multiple systems. It was found that you loose so much after compression, that it is not even worth playing the game. I wish everything came in a nearly uncompressed format. Despite having a very large byte size, the games I tested were so much better that it was like cleaning a very dirty window.
You game devs will just never get it, do you. Looking exquisitely polished: 1% of the game experience. Looking any which damned way as long as there is something to look at at all, given it's any better than an abjectly horrible smudge: 99% of the game experience. Every single game dev does this - "look at the new, polished CGs with all these awesome dynamic lights and shadows and exquisite inking line work we spent the last year on while denying you a release - isn't it SO much better?" while all I can think of is "NOBODY, ABSOLUTELY NOBODY would have noticed or minded if you just left it as it was, but we sure would have loved a release this time last year...". So no. I don't see a problem, none whatsoever, with playing the version that downloads in half the time the original does.
*blink* Dude, what the fuck are you talking about? If I was going to freak out about exquisite detail I wouldn't be compressing my game with the single best compression currently out there. The end result I deliver is already compressed with a mild quality loss over the original PNGs. But the way compression works? Compressing something already compressed does bad things without really getting you much of an advantage. If they had access to my original PNGs and choose to compress it at a higher quality loss than I use, that would be one thing. The fall off would be fairly linear. But compressing already compressed images has a much sharper quality fall off.
Hey Ma'am or Sir, I've been playing a bit and I like your game, is the raw uncompressed 12 GB version available on your Patreon? And if so, is it 4K or QHD (2K) aka 1440p?
I'm afraid not. I used to provide the uncompressed PNG/MP4 version of the game, until it got ridiculously unwieldly in size (currently, the game has over 500 animations, most of which have 3 speeds). The version I do release is 2K (2560x1440) and compressed with 90%+ preservation of image quality. There isn't actually much of a visual difference between the PNG/MP4 version and he Webp/Webm I provide. I went with the best combination of quality-to-compression I could get after fairly extensive testing. It's why it annoys me so much when people immediately and blindly compress it farther out of some sort of obsessive compulsive instinct. They aren't really gaining much, and I'm pretty sure they don't even look at the images they are compressing. The Patreon release is simply one build in advance of the public one. Well, and with the gallery enabled.
... that's why the 12 GB didn't seem like much..
That depends on what changelog you read. And what route you're talking about. If it's Revina's, here days 3-5 for week 6 are in Build 23. Which is getting it's public version is...about half an hour, actually. It's uploading at the moment.
