I believe the main point here is that I may have a different understanding of what you consider "sandbox" compared to what I understand as "sandbox."

To me, a sandbox is a part of the game where the player needs to navigate the map to find actions or missions. In the sandbox mode of Our Home, for example, we have:

  • Events that are triggered at specific times and locations
  • Conversations that allow you to find certain characters in specific locations, enabling you to ask questions or access certain scenes from their daily lives
In VN mode, this characteristic doesn't exist. All missions are triggered sequentially, following the chronological order of events. While in sandbox mode you can choose which event to play and when to start a mission, in VN mode there's minimal player control, ensuring that everything is triggered logically without requiring the player to be in specific places or at specific times. The events unfold automatically in sequence.

In both modes, as well as in many other games classified as VNs, there are some free-roaming moments, which are specific occasions where the player can freely explore an environment to collect items or discover extra content. One example of this is the mission with Marta, where she burns her hands. In that moment, the player can find secret photos, access exclusive scenes (such as seeing Kim in the bathroom), or collect collectible items.

These moments are designed to provide access to extra content, and although it’s possible to implement a different mechanism for this, I don’t see these brief free-roaming moments as a major issue. Usually, the text clearly explains what needs to be done, and the required actions are quite simple.

This type of mechanic is present in numerous games classified solely as VNs, and it’s not something exclusive to games with sandbox elements.

I could name several examples, but I’ll avoid mentioning other games to prevent unnecessary comparisons or discussions between fan communities.

tldr:
The difference between VN and sandbox modes in Our Home lies in how events are triggered. In sandbox mode, the player needs to navigate the map at specific times and locations to activate events, while in VN mode, everything happens automatically and sequentially. Free-roaming moments may occur in both modes, but they are rare and designed to provide access to extra content. This mechanic is common in many VN games and does not, in itself, constitute a forced sandbox element.
I understand what you mean, but I think the term used is incorrect. Because when I hear the word 'sandbox,' I immediately think of Minecraft. They gave a play area and basically said do whatever you want. However, your game is naturally not like this. I think we should find a different term. Frankly, if a game doesn't offers a lot of mechanics and doesn't say to the player 'do whatever you want, the main story? you don't have to touch it if you don't want to,' then it shouldn't be labeled as a 'sandbox' game. Of course, this is my opinion.

Following this approach, we could simply say that 90% of the games labeled as sandbox aren’t actually sandbox.

I believe that, over time, this tag started being used to label games that had the feature I mentioned. However, nowadays, they're tagging any type of free-roaming action as sandbox. If we follow this path, a VN will eventually be reduced to just click actions to move to the next image, and soon everything could be considered a kinetic novel.

By the way, I agree with what you said, actually an ongoing discussion about restructuring these tags. This should happen soon, so the terms are likely to change. https://thef95zone.info/threads/new-tag-discussion.168425/

I made the mistake of playing the sandbox mode after being baited by the description. It over-promises, under-delivers and is incredibly linear. It is certainly not helped by the lack of content.

Furthermore, it appears that the women have experienced a mutation that has caused them to have orange peel for skin.

Free-roam elements will be our focus after we finish reworking the prologue. After a certain version, we focused on advancing the story as much as possible—I mentioned this in previous messages. ( The good thing is that, in this case, you can simply change the mode without needing to restart the game. )

Regarding the skin, I am aware of a version where the skin textures were quite off, and one character's skin ended up looking very different compared to the others. Let me know if you're referring to this issue or to all the renders.

One important thing to note: skin, in general, is not "perfect" or completely smooth—it naturally has texture and relief.

I adopted the MC’s definition in the prologue as being Lord Farquaad from the "Shrek" cartoon. I’m not proud of it, but it was the best we had at the time. We're behind schedule because the current version is too long, but this will be addressed in the prologue rework. We understand that not everyone will be happy with the changes, but we’ve done our best.

About Emily’s Accident:
I understand that it may seem illogical that no one was found after Emily's accident. However, not every police department or public institution operates like in episodes of CSI, where investigations are taken to the extreme. In reality, police often conduct an initial search and then give up. From the MC’s perspective—and that of the people involved—there was an exhaustive effort to find the family. Furthermore, in some countries, like the one where Our Home takes place, the police are not exactly known for their integrity or efficiency.

About the MC and His Boss (Norah):
You may be analyzing this from the player’s perspective. For the MC, there’s nothing wrong with Norah because he doesn’t know she’s a "beast." We can’t write a story where the MC magically reads minds or knows someone’s bad intentions in advance. Villains or criminals rarely walk around with "I’m the antagonist" written on their foreheads; this is something the protagonist will discover over time.

Thank you for playing and sharing your feedback. It’s important for us to understand players’ perceptions so we can improve the game’s narrative and overall experience.

What version will be made available on Steam? Will it contain updates as they are released?

Since we weren’t able to finish reworking the prologue within the timeframe we had hoped for, the Steam version will be the same as the Patreon version 3.00.0. However, the release process on Steam follows a different dynamic compared to Patreon. I explain this in more detail in this post: https://thef95zone.info/threads/our-home-v2-20-0-old-hiccup.87718/post-14996495

One important detail not mentioned on Steam is that I’ve noticed VN games are often released in acts or chapters, where players need to purchase the game again for each new release. Our Home will not follow this model. Instead, we will keep the game in Early Access until Chapter 1 is fully completed ( This will take a little while to be completed. ). This means that Steam players will receive regular updates according to our schedule.

Hello again, I installed the patch that updated from 2.19.x to 2.20.0. I was able to continue where I left off, but in this scene (the attached image occurs before going to Emily's for dinner) I get an error repeatedly when I try to examine the bag. I say ignore the error and it gives another error. What is the reason for this? And how can I solve it? Thanks in advance for your help.
