So I had the same issue of not being able to buy any candy. The solution, as always, was to cheat.

As mentioned there's a new update and it seems to add quite a bit of content!

Confirmed that this update works with current saves. You'll have to do a bit of grinding still for the quests as it doesn't register any progress for them besides you getting the pumpkin past certain levels and accumulating money. Enjoy, fellow freaks!
