Of course the MC is clueless. He's deliberately written that way. If you don't see the humor in his actions, you shouldn't be playing this game. It will only frustrate you.

A retard? No. Think of any TV sitcom you have ever watched where the male lead continually makes silly blunders that cause him all kinds of problems, but that work out by the end of the show and the female lead still loves him regardless.
In every game that Viitgames has ever made, there is at least one character who carries the humor in that game. In Haley's Story for most times it was the title character; in The Taming of the Brat, more often than not it was Belle. In this game, clearly it is the MC around whom the humor revolves.
If you play this game with that attitude in mind, you might actually enjoy it. After playing the game, if you wind up not liking it (which is fine, since not everyone laughs at a particular joke), then there are plenty of other games out there.
But you won't have wasted too much of your time, since it plays quickly.
If you made that comment there's a good chance you'll be joining the team that wants the LIs to ditch the MC and run off together.

Personally, I don't see it as humor, but as the MC being genuinely flawed. Christina even tells him he's a bit of an asshole. He's inconsiderate, but Diana isn't good at communicating her wants and needs either. The result is them growing apart, and them needing to reconnect with each other.
On another topic, I think a line from Diana is missing here:
