No. The anime is basically just one of the bad end routes.
The anime combined the three worst routes together: Kotonoha broken (Kotonoha SA by Taisuke), To my Children (Sekai killed Makoto after being dumped), Bloody end (Kotonoha killed Sekai). You can feel the malicious intention of the director after watching it.

Yeah, it was really fucking weird. I felt like him deciding he actually likes Sekai more was acceptable and reasonable, because Sekai and him seem to be close. Then he started fucking all the other girls and it's like where the hell did that even come from? He wasn't a fuckboy womanizer at the start of the story and there's basically no reason for why so many girls are into him. Otome is explained has having had a crush on him for years, but Hikari of all people shouldn't be fucking him.

Makoto didn't like Sekai more, he liked the fact that he could have sex with her easily instead of having to properly court Kotonoha more. Which is why he quickly moved on to other girls that made themselves available and also got bored with Sekai as soon as things got real and she wanted to have a serious relationship. She dug her own grave by using sex to seduce him in the first place. Of course he wasn't gonna suddenly change his ways and become a good boyfriend/husband after that.

I get that's what happens in the VN, but in the anime, they didn't really convey that. It just fastforwards to him fucking the other girls.

There were even more gruesome endings for Kotanoha in the ps2 version that she being killed by Sekai which HQ version did not include.
Now I'm curious... how many of these are there, and why were they cut? We already have the lesser girl killing the better girl, so they should have given us these too...

Yeah, you're right. And not just better, but by a country mile haha.
Honestly, I don't see Kotonoha ever being as popular to a western audience. The Japanese might like that she's shy, reserved, and needy but the first impression I got is that she's lonely and boring to talk to.

She seems like the more all around well received girl. Anime-wise at least. Likely because she ain't the villain. Even Makoto was like, "She boring af" after the first date XD With the VNs, its hard not to slide right into Sekai the first chance you get! Her aesthetics and voice are perfect IMO.

I was talking about the anime. Makoto was frustrated that his relationship with Kotonoha was going slow and she wasn't giving him much sexually, Sekai offered him immediate sex and he took it. You're just interpreting that as Makoto genuinely liking Sekai more as a person or long term partner but that's just not the case.

I could be misremembering. The last time I seen the anime was like 14 years ago. Either way, the anime basically felt like a shock value machine with little substance.

I don't really like the anime either since it basically decided to adapt all the worst parts about the game without any of the good ones so now people only see the series in a negative light. You can't even make Makoto that sex crazed and degenerate in the game regardless of your choices. I guess somebody was really trying to capitalize on the shock value or a really unique take on the whole harem trope which was gaining popularity at the time.

Does anyone know what happens if you don't make any choices for the whole game? I can't imagine they would give you a good ending.
I'm not 100% sure since it's been years since I've played this but from what I recall no choices just leads you to Sekai ending (if I'm wrong it's a Kotonoha ending). The game still counts "no choice" as a choice and it often ends up going in Sekai's favor. You can tell the top bar moving towards one girl or the other. Getting one of the notorious bad endings is way more difficult and convoluted than just picking nothing.
