My biggest gripe with sandbox games is that they require a TON more coding, which slows development. Additionally, all the extra lines of code needed to prevent continuity errors tends to let those errors slip through much more often. If you can do event 3 with girl 2 before or after doing event 1 with girl 4 and one scene references the other, you need multiple lines of code to ensure continuity for each possible order. VN format can give the same scenes without all the bloated code slowing down development and risking continuity errors.

Why is everyone complaining about sandbox in this game specifically? There's a thousand other games with sandbox out there like Milfy City or Long Live the Princess and I don't see people complaining about it there.

I haven't tried the sandbox here, but usually the renpy sandbox games bring pretty poor experience and are frequently not liked. Sometimes, you can find something okayish though.
