Sandbox implies that the player has no particular goal and the entertainment he comes up with himself, taking advantage of different opportunities. It's strange to hear this in relation to a game that is as story-driven and straightforward as possible. But it's ok. Point-and-click elements are available, so we were asked to specify them in the tags.
I wouldn't really say sandbox means the player has no goal. A lot of sandbox games have a main quest that everything else revolves around. Imo sandbox is more about how the story is broken up, and that the player is given the freedom to move around and pursue different things aside from the main quest. You choose what storyline the mc is going to do that in game day instead of a vn where everything is railroaded.
This game isn't primarily sandbox, but I feel like it's sandbox at certain parts. Not the stuff on the ship, that's just free roam I'm talking about that one section where you stopped to help out the different crew members
I personally don't consider free roam and sandbox to be the same thing. If I'm looking for a sandbox game it means I'm looking for a game were I have the freedom to move around whenever I want and do different questlines or love interests when I choose too. With maybe some repeatable content. Free roam means the game is a linear VN that's occasion broken by sections where you get to move around a limited area for a bit before going back to the vn

I generally save before every choice, since I don't know which ones will carry additions or subtractions in character relationship points. I get that it seems a little too overly cautious, but it's just for peace of mind I guess.
I've been enjoying the game so far but I do have one suggestion. In the gallery, I would like an option to replay an entire sex scene that I've unlocked and have it be organized by character. I don't want to just see the images in the scene, I want to be able to easily reread the scenes without having to make a save every time a scene comes up.
Also one weird thing is that it's almost impossible to stick to one female character in the third chapter. I was trying to do a monogamy challenge run to see if staying loyal vs fucking every girl would make any real difference in how a character acts. By the time I was underwater, my character was practically tripping into fish woman pussy left and right. The only reason it stands out to me is that there are options to say that you are taken already and believe in only being with one person at a time but you kind of don't have any control over when you're going to fuck the next fish woman.

On the second - the player always has the option to opt out of the NSFW scene
