More curious than really ranting, and not specific to "Friends in Need", but why do devs do those weird X-mas, Halloween or whatever events and holidays ? Or rather i kinda get it, i just wonder why are they so often a separate download and standalone ? Just include them in the main game in that update. It's not as if the people that dislike them, will suddenly feel different, if made into a separate thing imho
I don't like them. Or rather, i like some of them, but most of them are shit. I think the time devs spend on these kind of 'specials' is much better spent on their main games/stories, because as it is, 99% of the devs are WAY too slow with regular updates.

I'm somewhat wondering over why devs, don't just try to include them as a regular update, especially if or when the goal is to stall for time... or even when it isn't. Maybe i missed some player-base rioting over the mere idea and it became common across games to not do that . Again just curious and find it odd.

Seems counterproductive to me... i do know people lazy enough to not bother download an extra separate mini-game. Same people would actually just check it, if included in the main game as an update. Even for extra/bonus/non canon events and scenes
Now that I remember, he did include an earlier Halloween update(2023?) and another mini story in the main game, but only when the new update was released. Maybe this will be integrated the same way in the future.

This one was ok because it's part of the story - it fits. It bugs me when devs do holiday specials that really don't fit. Like if the people are on another planet or whatever - not even human - but suddenly they feel the need to decorate a tree or all wear costumes and carve pumpkins.

I sorta get it, since there's less pressure, you can just sorta do whatever, etc.; it's probably way quicker to do and a fun thing for the dev. Not really "work" but more something to enjoy.

But there's *some* projects where you get roughly 5% progress in 2 years but then an hour of ultra-complex Christmas/Halloween/whatever stuff with all sorts of assets and complex lights and whatnot ... it's absolutely bonkers to me then too. ^^;

And yeah, as Pixillin' says, it then often is completely nonsensical on top. Though that always bugs me with big commercial games like MMOs and such already as well, and some people just don't care, so maybe that's just us perpetual grumps that got a problem with that ;)

I like to think that the devs that do them are probably going through a bit of writer's block (or burn out). And having the opportunity to put their characters into a classic structured event allows them both a respite from the pressure of advancing their plot forward and gives them the freedom to do whatever they want with the characters, unhampered by the main story or any potential corner they were writing themselves into. It is a good method of getting the creative juices flowing again.

So yeah, while most of the special episodes are bad, I tend to think that the regular episodes come back stronger afterwards. At least for the devs who are actually good writers lol.

ITT: Why I never promote the holiday specials, and prefer to allow them to quietly fly under the radar.. :'D

I mentioned this in yesterday's Dev Update, but it'll be added to the main game with the next release. Some of my supporters are in places where their bandwidth is limited, and I don't see the point in making them download 3 GB+ just for a mini-update.

why does he have 6 fingers
Because I wanted this video thumbnail to feel like AI slop, so I employed.. AI slop. It's not really accurate to the time period this flashback takes place in, but I felt like it was more important to evoke the feel of a YouTube clickbait thumbnail, than to be entirely accurate. I dunno, I may just make it another Daz figure, we'll see.

ffs I was excited for a split second until I seen "[Mini-Sode: Blue Valentine]" Why do devs waste time with these garbage seasonal throwaway updates?
So far, 2/3 mini-sodes I've done have been additive to the narrative. They're not story-critical, but they're hardly 'throwaway updates.' You get a better idea of who characters (Brent, Alex, Sapphire..) are, and where they've been, after playing them. They're a chance to step away from MC/Guy's POV, and see stuff from a different angle.

And they're a chance for me to put out some content, without meaningfully affecting the normal dev work. People are free to complain, but last month I put out a 130+ image teaser for Chapter 11 that I mostly worked on over my (unpaid) vacation, and this month will have a 300+ image teaser for Chapter 1, as well as this mini-sode which I put up for free. I'd understand the gripes if I was over here fucking around with something which added nothing to the story, while also delaying progress on the core story. But, that's hardly the case.

EDIT: For anyone reading this, the Nicki patch was just a little joke I put out to play with the fans here. Be aware that installing it will revert your game back to version .375, so if you really want to see it, install it in a back-up copy of the game.

Well, gang.. Here it is. People have asked for it. Screamed for it. I've gotten private messages raking me over the coals, people pledging to never play the game again, and a smattering of poor reviews. I know when to admit I'm wrong.

So, here is.. . If you install this patch into your main FiN folder and allow it to merge with the existing "game" folder, it will overwrite existing script script files, and add new images to support a new path. With this path, you can choose to excise Nicki entirely from the story.

Just start from the beginning and, when you get to the choice to help her or not, choose "Tell her to fuck off."

I think that's because working 24/7 in the same shit burns you sooner than later. Minisodes, X-Christmas and the such are a way to decompress doing some fun shit not related to the main plot-game.

That mega not opening is on your end... works fine for me
Anti-Nicki Patch .rar 27.9 M is the info on it

The most anybody can do for you is mirror it to a different host ... Butttttttt....
out of courtesy you should ask NeonGhosts
since it's his work and if it's even still compatible.

I actually need to just add this into the game as extra content, so you can access it after you finish Chapter 1, if only so the mods could remove the link on the first page. I'll put a reminder on my whiteboard to do that, with the next release.
