First of all, you can simply support the developer for a month an update gets released. People spend hours of their lives creating stories and learning stuff(and I'm not talking about fast AI cashgrabs).
Second: each story has a bunch of character arcs. If I simply go through the main storyline without diving deep into side characters and their arcs, what are these characters for? They'll simply be dull decorations. Like...take Garrus from Mass Effect - he's the most beloved character from that franchise. Would the main story about Reaper invasion suffer if instead of Garrus there would've been Joe from Nebraska? No. But would I care about my squadmates if they all were generic dudes? Don't think so.

As far as niche fetishes added by community vote - it simply goes to "supply-demand". If the core of my patrons ask me about adding a NTR substory to character that seems to fit that role - why not?
Everything comes down to common sense)

At the end of the day, some devs suck. Some devs don't. And some devs quit(take Ancho, for example) simply because the funding for their game is low and it's simply better for them to get regular office job instead of working on a game that will never feed them, as much as they love it.

If nobody will support us - you'll just end up playing ten games at best. Just how it was 10 years ago, when your choice possibilities were much more narrow than nowadays.
Your mass effect examples misses the point. I don't mind side stories, they are fine. How many times tho do we get a game that has a decent story and they cuck the main plot because they fear funding will dry up if the finish the part of the game people actually care about and want to see the end. So they start working on side things for months on end racking in more money, not for a better story, but to drag out development for as long as possible.

Community votes are just more bloat and time sinks for development but hey thats the business model. Lets not kill the golden goose.

i hope all western patreon models go out of business, what ever will we do without AI cheating phone game #40. japanese make way better porn games and don't acutally milk production.

I can't think of a single game on this site that deserves a penny for development. The patreon model time and time again has shown to be a disaster. How many times do we have to see a game milk the main story and give shitty update after shitty update on some side character? Or how many games get forced niche fetishes added by "community vote?"
to be fair man, not every dev is like this one. TK8000 (high school tutor, solvalley school) for example pauses patreon and does not charge anyone a penny if he didnt release any new content for his games that month. so not everyone is a milker undeserving of any money.

that being said, milking is still super common.but can you blame them? i mean if you could sit back and get 6 million (the bare minimum dark cookie has made assuming patrons only donate 1$ over that time since the start of the "tech update) for doing basically dick all 99.9% of the year, then work for maybe like 2 hours to pump out 3-5 minutes of content so patreon doesn't kick you off the site... wouldn't you? i mean for 6 million dollars i would do an awful lot, being able to do nothing and still get it is like a dream come true. why the fuck would anyone not? so yeah there are a lot of milkers, and dark cookie is the milker king. but its the same reason the normal video game industry is riddled with cash shops, micro transactions, and loot "packs" because the whales keep buying, and they buy so much it rakes in more money than just normally buying the game by like a factor of 10. it is what it is. its normal to do what makes the most money with the least amount of effort. you just mad you didn't think of it first.

Edit: i just wanna add and make clear, im not defending dark cookie, he's a scum scammer. im just spelling out the reality of the situation. and frankly its shocking how many people seem to still be defending this literal millionaire scammer.

Too harsh. I can think of several games in the category of deserving ongoing support.
Peasant's Quest. Superhuman. Ravager (this one is more subjective, they have slowed down a lot recently). Parasite Black.

Those are the main ones for me, games that regularly release high quality updates and with developer committed to making a good product. Maybe a few smaller titles too, like Vae Victis. There aren't many games like that, but they do exist.

First of all
I suggest to go all-out and stop taking products with just one transaction. Let's rent everything and pay monthly for it: house, car, clothes, phones, food, small stuff... even nails and coffins should be rented as well.

I have a good example of how people capitalised on their game with both systems: fenoxo and CO (Corruption of champions and TiTS). CoC2 is released on steam and is not greedy milking people who wanted to just support the dev team. Did I have obligation to pay for a free game?? No. Did they scam me by selling the same product every month with little or no changes?? No. Are they allowed to do it anyway???????? OH YES THEY ARE.

i don't care about the game anymore, dragon age dreadwolf made me bitter and not look optimistically for future releases...i just come here for the chaos every time there's some sort of update. I like a lot of games that are on this platform and i will send money for translators to keep doing gods work when i can. A lot of disappointment is what i see summed up every time i check this thread. I get it. I supported succulence+2 and remtairy. One produced a great final product, the other well...i dont care anymore honestly. If there isnt a completed tag now...ill get to it later. Maybe later.

100% agree. i haven't done the maths, but you probably end up paying more over time for these trash games than you would with a AAA game.

comparing AAA games like Mass Effect with millions upon millions of dollars of funding and expertise to a games like this is actually so stupid, i can't even...

It all comes down to the developers and their games. Hell, whole "Mass Effect 2" is a one long side quest.
I partially agree with you on adding more and more characters though. It's a pretty common practice with Harem/FemProtag types of games, where instead of diving deeper into relationships with already written characters, lads add another woman to that harem.
Or FemProtag, where there are simply too many potential LIs and storylines end up being neglected(looking at you, AWAM).
Also, the issue with some of these games is that they don't have the root from which all branches grow. "Momma cheats on her husband with every guy from the hood" is a shitty root, for example)
Balancing NSFW action with storytelling while not fucking up the narrative isn't an easy task. If you give action too early - it'll just be another generic porn fiction, if you go too slow - peeps will get mad cuz of blue balls. Finding a perfect balance is hard.

But going back to the topic of the discussion - yeah, unfortunately a lot of devs fuck up third act when instead of concluding arcs and answering questions they just add a new couple to them.

At times I wonder why (if we exclude milking), because over the years you get tired of your own characters and want to write something new.

Community votes are just more bloat and time sinks for development but hey thats the business model. Lets not kill the golden goose.
Community votes are great if the developer knows how to separate valuable points from bullshit. Feedback is important, mate.
If my game's based on vanilla tropes and some random dude will send 100$ my way asking smth like: "cAn yOu mAkE mAiN LI cHeAt oN MC wItH cHAd wItH gIaNt dOnG", I'll simply send him these 100$ back, because making a sweetheart that protagonist has been chasing for an entire game turn into a whore without any reasons is just stupid writing.

At the end of the day, all of us are different. Obviously, there are dudes who'll milk shit dry. But there always will be a dozen of people who simply love to tell stories(and I'm not talking about myself). It's up to customer - you, to get where's wine and where's vinnegar. Sites like F95 are good for that - you can check the game for free. If you like it and have funds for it - why not support the developer? If you see that the developer's been shady for last couple of months - you can simply play his game for free and that's it.

Incredible update
Changelog:
-The last nail on the left hand was redrawn to better fit the new art.
-The stream was run for 2 hours, 3 times a week, but only 15 minutes of the stream were dedicated to the drawing.
-A button that was already there was added, but it's now better.
-We laugh at donors 4 times a week.
-Two missions were improved. The background, which was already done, was actually enlarged, but the Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V were used on the images, and the shadow that no one notices was fixed.
