VN - Ren'Py - To Be a King [Ch.11] [ITRoy]

Pros:
Story Template: The general plot is actually a good setup for how someone could become king.

Renders: The renders themselves are generally good.

Neutral:
LIs: There are some really great LIs (like the red head slave), but other LIs you will despise.

Bad:
Fake Choices: One of the major problems with this game is fake choices. For example, you may reject a LI but they keep coming back and back. In one case, you still get a swinging/sharing scene with a LI you rejected.

MC: The MC is a general and the greatest of them all, so he should have confidence, be commanding, and not be a pushover. That is what I would expect from a general who is well-known, but this MC is the complete opposite. The LIs walk all over him (even the slaves push him around), and he does nothing about it. Furthermore, his job was supposed to be protecting the king and kingdom, but he, so far, has not arrested 3 LIs who have openly admitted to him of committing treason (stealing from the treasure, plotting against the throne), so what is the point of him if he will not even do his job if the enemy has a pussy?

Character Models: The character models started out great in the early version, but recently with the model change, they look like lifeless dolls (and are a bit scary at times).

Overall, a game that had potential, but it suffers from a MC that acts like a modern day teenager and fake choices.

This is probably the first time ever I want less sex in an ero game. At this point, I really just want the plot to proceed. I feel like I was promised a political epic but all I get are scenes of the protagonist sleeping around. Yes the girls are beautiful and the renders are great, but this really is not good fap game with how dry it is, and the plot is dragging along. -- Reviewed as of Chapter 10.

I'm not understanding all of these poor reviews recently. The story is solid, the writing is good, and there are a good variety of women.

Does it feel like a lot of women "throw" themselves at the MC? Sure, but that can easily be explained away by the fact that the MC is attractive, treats women well (no given during that time period), and -- maybe most importantly -- politically acceptable bordering on advantageous. It's not a SUPER far leap, especially for the sheltered princesses.

And in terms of character development....what do you expect from a porn game? It feels like every important character has their nuances / motives and act according to those motives. They also have back stories and twists and turns here and there as you get further into the game.

This game won't be everybody's taste, since no game is, but it's a high quality game for what it is.

The renders are great, the story could be interesting but I didn't go too far in it, I think I only played Chapter 1, and in two weeks I only played this VN for 1 hour because the characters aren't really interesting, all the girls meet the MC for first time or see him again after years or months and automatically they are in love or want to fuck the MC without a reason, just saying that the first 2 days in the castle the MC has sex with one the princess and other girl.
The MC is not a charming guy, he shows no affection towards anyone, the MC never shows that he "love" or that at least he likes the princess, but suddenly when you choose if you want to be with her, he loves her, but still shows no emotion towards her, only when they have sex. He is not smart, in some moments he is plain dumb, like when one of the princess is kidnaped, he never tought, "why they will kidnap the princess and not the prince when he is far more important than her?", he only thinks that when one of the princess point that to him, he is plain dumb.. The conversations are boring as fuck, that is other reason why it took me so much to play only one hour, aside than the characters aren't good either. The political plot can be interesting but is delayed because you have a moment when the characters talk about the King and how keep him safe, but then they end the conversation and we see the MC talking with some of the girls and they telling him to visit them in their room that night and have sex with them. There are some skills and points but the game never explain you what they do, the days in the game are like this, conversation in the morning, end of the conversation, afternoon, conversation with one girl, end of the conversation, is night, sex with one girl and bedtime, start the next day, repeat.
So the story of this game is not about a soldier trying to save the king, is about a guy having sex with every girl he meet and obviously the girls just open they arms and legs for him without thinking twice, there is nothing else.

This game started really well with an interesting plot and desirable women; no idea what happened at some point but with the last updates really went downhill, the story is lost and the mc fucks a different female every 2 minutes. Same for the women faces, at some point most of them were modified and the lighting got fucked up as well. And because there are so many new women in the recent releases and all get fucked, the story will progress in 10 years.

I don't care about the narrative of too many VNs here but this one holds my attention. Which is just as well because the h/scenes are poor. Nothing says functional disengagement quite like buttons for 'handjob' and 'doggy style'. Nothing wrong with the renders (sharp) or the characters (distinct). Tropes such as the look-at-my-outfit perv-show are ingeniously worked into a cod-Roman vaguely 2nd-century setting costumed like Tinto Brass's Caligula (only with more underwear, in the case of the elder daughter, presumably to make her more unattainable). The court intrigue, coy but English-native dialogue with the occasional burn, pseudo-Roman detailing and quick pacing all compensate for the perfunctory h/scenes and rather characterless MC. Probably worth a go whether or not you follow GoT.

Good set of female casts. General looks like a general. Why he didnt marry someone yet is an wonder. Game delivers when it comes to the sex scenes. Story isnt the strongest, ok for an adult game. The setting offers the opportunity to expand a lot but the dev took a simplistic turn of events to advance a story. Granted would take a lot of resources and work to explore the setting in detail for a single person. Good release schedule.

If you're looking for a simple harem VN, this is an alright piece.
The combination of easy dicking and breakneck plot progression makes it rather less torturous than others with the same basic standards.

Version Played : v0.8.1

I tried getting into this game several times, and finally I gave it one more shot, or around 1.5 hours of my time. And I couldn't really get into it. My experience is as follows:

Writing is subpar, makes the world and most characters seem bland and one-dimensional. For a game that has very (IMO) boring sex scenes with little dialogue that is very detrimental. Choices so far seem very basic (fuck or don't), most of the time you just end up doing what other characters tell you to do, which I also dislike.

Renders are quite good, but constant fade-ins/outs are extremely annoying. Sex scenes lack animations, are very basic (single or few frames) and desperately lack sexy dialogue.

Music is varied and fitting but I found it annoying.

Overall I really wanted to like this game and I enjoy the genre overall, but it's just not good.

And yet I can see the effort put in so I can't give it lower that 3 stars.

If you are willing to invest the time this game has an interesting story with lots of political intrigue, lots of characters, and great renders. It would be nice if there was a better way to track the in game time, but that is a minor complaint

This was amazing I am eagerly awaiting the next upload. While in all truth I'm interested to see how my choices play out. I have never played a game that wasn't studio developed that made me question my choices. You would think oh porn game be horny but this game is amazing at recognizing your choices and letting you know it. The interactions you have with characters changes drastically depending on your choices. I will be playing it through several times when it is fully released to see all the routes.

TLDR The game is well polished and your choices matter maybe don't always be horny.

I honestly don't understand why people are reviewing this so highly, the story is not "Game of Thrones" level storytelling. Maybe if they mean the show after the content based on the books, then I guess. But it's just MC is a famous general, but is COMPLETELY passive in his interactions with women, and he comes to protect the king's palace. Then, sex happens because the goddess says so. Obviously that is as reductive as possible, but it's not wrong. I have a lot of issues with the storytelling that I'll get into in a few, but people that praise this so high can't have read "real" stories. This isn't bad, and it's almost worth a 4 from me, but I just see too much wrong with this.

As I said, MC is a general that has done great things... That you never see and only hear about anything secondhand. Anyway, he has been summoned to the castle to protect the royal family due to attempts on the King's life recently. The story ACTUALLY starts with Princess Valentina saying how much she loves MC because he played with her as a child? How deep. And that love trend continues with almost all the women here. As MC walks arounds the same courtyard for the entire story, he runs into the king's advisor, a (still at the time of writing) possible red herring for the attempts on the King's life. The prince is currently the same thing. And all of the issues they encounter never seem serious. There is a period where one of the princesses are kidnapped and for DAYS no one know what's happening or seems like they should do anything. Everyone just asks "Any new on Princess Cassia?" MC just says "Nope." And that's it, it's solved by someone OFF SCREEN coming to a soldier saying there's weird people by a cave. MC does nothing. As of end of content, there's still no answer, though I can speculate: Aelinia and/or Valentina are the real culprits. Valentina has been retconned to be smart so it's a possibility. Realistically it will be either one of the red herrings because there's no way this will have a big plot twist, or an off-screen villain that we haven't met yet. So I'm not holding my breath.

There is one character that's well written, and it's only if things turn out the way I think would be interesting, Aelinia. She's not obsessed spoiled brat, Valentina that the dev probably got too much criticism about so he retconned her to be secretly intelligent. Nor is she shallow and beauty obsessed like Cassia. And The bored neglected housewife that it Helena. Even then, all of the women have at most three conversations with MC before they're completely in love with him. But the conversations are all MC acting like Chuckie from Rugrats like "I don't know Valentina, your daddy will be awfully mad if we have a relationship." And the women saying he's handsome and they want to do it anyway.

I don't normally say this kind of stuff, but MC is NOT appealing at all. He somehow simultaneously looks like Charlie Sheen after a three week drug bender, and a 50 year old cuck with botox to tighten up his face. He is unappealing in every way. I don't get it, but the whole thing can be explained away with the crappy excuse "Goddess Anna wanted it to happen." And the day to day writing is completely disjointed. There are scenes where MC is still kissing or talking to a character and the game just completely cuts to something else that's happening. No warning, no transitional dialog, not even a title saying "Later that day..." It's all just the dev wrote an event and this is the next event. I do not like the writing here, and I can almost guarantee I won't like the outcome of this story but I will say it's not terrible. It's fault is it's trying to be about sex before the less than stellar story. Which is whatever, this is a site for dumb porn games, I just think you can do more in an adult game than just making it about ugly rich guy having sex.

My last issue is the renders. Everyone has deadpan faces or lifeless eyes. A lot of them have bloodshot or just really dark eyes and it's weird. On top of the facial posing gets noticeably worse throughout this, and they don't show emotions beyond very happy, surprised, or sad. And it's a shame because this is one of the few times the rest of the posing didn't feel stiff. I don't know, it's a mixed bag.

TLDR - The story is different from the usual crap, and is mildly interesting. The characters aren't amazing but not deal breakers. And it doesn't use default RenPy UI so it's not an eyesore. Give it a try.

This is the best game I have ever played till now. best story, best renders, best models, I like the way developer keeps suspence for the next update. Everything about this game is just awesome. I love this game.

Even without animations the intimacy was really well done, pretty arousing.
Really liked the characters, most of them anyways. My personal favorite was Valentina cute, beautiful, bubbly and dedicative personality she had. And the maid girl, Fiona i recon, red headed beauty, she was certainly something.
Romance was on par as well, i really wished for few animations though.
Dialogues and interactions were believable.. up to the mark.

This game review based on v.0.7.1 This game is great for you who like medieval setting, Lots of harem, got some worldbuilding and character development. To be a king takes place in a roman setting which led by the king arcellius.We as a MC takes as one of or the best general in the empire. This game really surprise me by having some branches story. While there are only four Main character path to choose, The story itself is really enganging. If you want to know the full story and some hidden at least you must replay the game with other path or choose most of the harem option. Well in conclusion, its really hard to find a Porn game like this with a character development, Branch story, and interesting storrytelling.

Really good and underrated VN. Highly Recommended. Great Story which had me wanting to find out what is happening and kept me intrigued. All the paths have their specific scenes which is awesome as well.

This VN is so underrated, it deserves more popularity, the girls are well made nd very hot, none of them are forced into the MC path, and story is also very good with nice historical touches on it.

- All girls turn into experienced prostitutes and say the same things during sex scenes even though most of them are virgins
- No animations, it's all static
- No interesting choices to make nor any consequences - choose any option you want it does not matter
- Story has no logic and follows a trajectory much like what you wrote for your first homework story in 4th grade
- No character development for the MC, no internally consistent personality for the MC (jumps from eternally loyal Mary Sue to banging the king's daughter in 5 seconds, considers a tavern wench an equal but treats his servant as a door mat, earnestly falls in love and claims every girl is "special and unique to me" but also bangs every woman within 100m with not a thought about how it hurts the girls he presumably loves)
- Every conversation feels like it was written as an engineering schematic; a pure info dump with nothing implied. It feels like there is no history between any character since every conversation comes with a complete accounting of everything leading up to that particular conversation ("Hi how are you? I was walking in the garden because I like morning walks in the garden because of my childhood where I grew up in a forested area and so gardens calm me down especially as I am now living in the palace where there are no forests and this is part of my personality and then I saw you and so I wandered over to say hi")
- No attempt to stay internally consistent. All characters in this medieval story talk like 2022 teenagers, going so far as to use terms like 'carbon dioxide'.
- The MC doesn't do anything except wander around and get poached by various hot girls. The MC doesn't feel like a person at all.
- Everyone loves the MC and will bang him as long as he doesn't explicitly scream no and run away. No girl feels like a conquest or emotionally invested, it's all just magic penis syndrome. No emotional connections are formed and no relationship feels deep or real.

All in all, I would not recommend this game, and it seems unlikely that any of these issues will be fixed.

This is the most boring game I've played in a long time, technically it's fine, the renders are fine (with some problems in the design, especially when certain characters are naked), but all that is the least of it, the big problem is the narrative, i will try to explain myself:

-The main character, is what they call a "Mary Sue", the perfect general, young, handsome, that all the women in the kingdom want to fuck with, including the three princesses and I think even the queen.

-The MC doesn't have any kind of progression, you already start as a legendary general, you start from the highest possible position, and basically you don't have to fight for anything.

-The dialogues are boring to the top.

-The king looks like an old idiot, unable to do anything, basically there is no serious antagonist in the whole plot, because your character is already a fusion between Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar.

-The female characters are boring, or annoying, or very childish, and they all want to fuck with you, there are no more interesting men in the kingdom apparently.

In short, the game has a big problem and that it has no progression, the main character is too perfect, he has everything easy, everyone wants with him, he achieves everything, etc. The story is boring in itself, if we add to this what has already been said about the MC, everything gets worse.

I would love to give it a better score, but the game was incredibly dense and very difficult to follow, the creator of this game is a good guy, he has a YouTube channel and he makes many guides on Daz and Ren'py, i recommend follow him, greetings.

P.D: This VN goes from bad to worse, in the update 0.9, every 5 minutes you have sex with a new character, there is not even a minute of script anymore (short sex scenes and they are made just with renders, boring and ultra vanilla basic sex), they changed the design of several characters and now they look much worse, anyway, waste of time.

Review of v0.6.1...

I like the medieval setting and it started with promise, but it kind of plateaued early and never really recovered.

The MC (you) is a famous general pulled from the eastern front and put in charge of the king's personal safety because of two failed assassination attempts. Unfortunately, all of the MC's duties in this regard happen off screen as 95% of the game time is spent with the MC roaming the palace spending time with the different girls.

The writing quality is average with little if no errors in the script. Although, I don't think I've ever seen the word "lovely" used so much.

The character models for the girls aren't bad. They could be better. Most of them have either some degree of tank ass, or weirdly shaped breasts in some form or another.

The girls have differing personalities. The youngest princess is 19, but acts like she's 12. The middle Princess is a spoiled diva. The oldest is the mature one. All of the side LIs also have their own personalities.

The model for the MC is kind of bland.

All of the characters have their own Bio page except for the MC, which he really needs. The youngest princess who is madly in love with the MC from the start is 19. The queen is 44. The MC makes a comment to the queen about how he is older than she is, but there is no Bio page with his age or history. Everything you learn about the MC you learn from the other characters.

At the risk of my review being reported I’d like to comment on something which is not unique to this game. I wish people would stop using the word “problematic”. It's such a fucking stupid word. When you write a sentence such as…”I hope this won’t be problematic.”…it should really be…”I hope this won’t be an issue.” It sounds so much better.

The story piqued my interest enough to want to come back to see how it plays out, but I won't necessarily recommend it or say to stay away. This one will be a mixed bag for people.
