One thing I’ve noticed is that games where the MC starts in a relationship but has other LI options always involve some incident of betrayal of trust that would justify a breakup (necessary to pursue other LIs in a non-harem game) or some justification that it was done with the best intentions for some greater good (to justify continuing the initial relationship). I found another really good game with this theme: Yesterday Crossroads. There, too, there are secrets and lies along with forced convivence. And there must be other games like this. Basically, it's what happens in NWT.
I don’t know Yesterday’s Crossroads but I can’t think of another one where there’s a built in Li or where the main Li is introduced in Chapter 1 where there is some massive betrayal. There are some where you don’t have to be with that Li but in those you’re basically just throwing her overboard for someone better - not because she did anything wrong.

Hellcat Lounge technically begins with MC finding out the GF is cheating on him, though that situation is not entirely confirmed to be true. He breaks up with her anyway.

I can think of a few like that - where the MC starts out right after a rough breakup but that usually happens right before the story starts so, in some cases, the ex isn’t even in it.

This Yesterday Crossroads has friends aware of everything but not telling MC. And after a part of the truth emerges he is forced to work in a small room with her full period. And there are more things hidden, cops and perhaps something supernatural behind. It's potencially on the same vein of Neverwhere Tales but without supernatural elements (I am not sure, who knows).

VN with situation similar to tNT would be Leap of Faith. Stephanie from LoF is pretty much better written Kaija.

In what sense,? to be fair the redemtion arc from Steph is good, (if you liked the character that is) With Kaija it is still outstanding, another thing is, if we are just to compare, the personality of the MC is very different.

Kaija's personality depends on how many points you have with her.. If they are high she loves MC and feel guilty, when they are not high enough, she only considr him friend and don't feel guilty. That's my problem, if I would manipulate my friend I would feel guilty as hell. Another thing is, what would she do if her mission would end? Break up suddenly and destroy their friendship? I believe that she is inferior to Stephanie(although I'm not her great fan) because she is dumb, she shouldn't start relationship to make her mission easier. There are better ways to do so, especially wher she is her targets best friend.

I have a save for all 3 paths (I'd had to since I wanted to explore the other 3 LI's)
Regarding "neutral" / Friends path, I don't think so, then how I understood, she feels guilty about but on the other hand she feels good because she stayed true to her (this is personal guess:vendetta)principles.
I fail blatanttly to see the manipulation, and on that path (at least in my playtroughs) MC does not really love her either, hence he is flirting with other girls. That the friendship took a strain is out of question though.

This has been discussed at least twice before on this thread so you may want to do a search and have a read. It is definitely similar but also very different. Like Kaija, I did not like Steph at all and refused to play her path. A friend convinced me to at least try her path and now Steph is one of my fav characters from that VN. Steph definitely redeemed herself. Kaija has not (although she may redeem herself eventually). The big thing for me is Kaija knew the MC from before, while Steph didn't. Kaija made the choice to deceive her bestfriend and get romantically involved with him. Steph didn't know the MC and her feelings grew and it tormented her. Kaija doesn't show too much remorse. Even on her love path she remains loyal to the Templars.

I know it is more complicated than that, but I don't want to restart the Kaija wars or bring up the old Steph v Kaija discussions again.

For me there isn’t any possible redemption path for Kajia ( wasn’t one for Steph either). At this point she could throw herself on a grenade to save MC and I still wouldn’t care about her. She has basically been deceiving MC for their entire relationship- since they were kids and then decided to ramp it up when they were adults- I don’t even believe that she was there as a bodyguard- more like a spy
